Laughing Into the New Year: Team Mental Health Resolutions

Ah, the New Year. A time for grand resolutions, lofty ambitions, and that inevitable reality check: we’re all creatures of habit. At our daily team check-in on the first day back at work, one of our ever-skeptical teammates declared, “No questions about New Year resolutions, please! Nobody follows them anyway.” Naturally, we all nodded in agreement, knowing how true it was. But who were we kidding? We’re a team that thrives on twisty challenges. So, we rephrased the question, giving it a spin: “What are your mental health resolutions for the New Year?” And just like that, the conversation took off. What followed was a mix of laughs, honest moments, and some surprisingly thoughtful ideas. Here are a few highlights from our chat — full of humor, teamwork, and hope for a healthier, happier year ahead.

Resolution #1: The Journal That Won’t Be Ignored

You know those sleek, leather-bound journals you buy with the best intentions? Turns out, we all have them. One colleague boldly proclaimed, “I resolve to write in my journal this year!” We nodded in solidarity, fully aware that this resolve might last exactly one week. Journaling can be hard. It’s like maintaining a long-distance relationship — with a piece of paper. Our colleague admitted their past journals often contained entries like, “Dear Diary, I’m back!” followed by months of radio silence. This year, they vowed to break the cycle. Even if their journal ends up with more doodles than deep reflections, it’s still progress. Because at its heart, journaling isn’t about perfection. It’s about taking a moment for yourself, whether that’s to sketch a dream, vent about your day, or scribble nonsense. Here’s hoping this year’s journal sees more ink and fewer cobwebs.

Resolution #2: The Power of Saying “No”

“I’m saying ‘no’ starting now, and that includes answering this question!” quipped one teammate, earning a round of applause. In a world that constantly pressures us to please, the simple act of saying “no” is a revolutionary mental health move. But saying “no” isn’t just about declining social invitations or skipping the third Zoom call of the day. It’s about reclaiming your time and energy. It’s about choosing yourself without guilt. Our teammate’s resolution wasn’t just witty — it was empowering. Their mantra? “If it’s not a heck yes, it’s a no.” No to last-minute requests. No to weekend plans involving excessive physical activity. And definitely no to anything that drains joy. Here’s to a year of boundaries, balance, and unapologetically prioritizing mental health.

Resolution #3: The Quest for Sleep

One brave soul, our office’s resident insomniac, made a heartfelt resolution: “I’m going to sleep this year.” The laughter that followed wasn’t dismissive — it was deeply understanding. Sleep, after all, is a battle many of us fight and lose nightly. We rallied around our insomniac warrior, promising to support their mission with “no-email-after-hours” agreements and herbal tea recommendations. Sleep isn’t something you can just summon; it requires routine, relaxation, and, sometimes, blackout curtains that could double as medieval fortifications. Whether it’s white noise playlists, bedtime rituals, or simply not sending late-night texts, we’re rooting for our friend to conquer the elusive beast of rest. This year, we believe their Netflix subscription will take a backseat to sweet dreams — well, hopefully.

Resolution #4: Social Media Detox (Attempt #457)

“I’m detoxing from social media,” declared another teammate, with the conviction of someone swearing off chocolate. We’ve all been there. The endless doom-scrolling, the pressure to post, and the constant comparison — it’s exhausting. Our teammate’s strategy involved limiting screen time, deleting apps during work hours, and replacing scrolling with something meaningful, like reading or actual conversation. We admired their resolve, even as we sheepishly checked our own notifications. Social media detoxing is an uphill battle, especially in a world that lives online. But even small changes can make a difference. Whether it’s replacing endless scrolling with mindful moments or simply taking a break, every step counts.

As our check-in wrapped up, it became clear that these resolutions weren’t just about grand gestures. They were about finding humor in our quirks, acknowledging our struggles, and supporting each other through it all. So here we are, stepping into the New Year with a mix of determination, humor, and a fair amount of skepticism. We know that mental health resolutions aren’t always easy to keep, but that won’t stop us from trying (and laughing about it along the way). In the grand scheme of things, it’s not about sticking to resolutions perfectly. It’s about making small, consistent efforts to take care of ourselves and each other. And if we happen to slip up — well, at least we’ll have some hilarious stories to share at our next team check-in.

Here’s to a year filled with more laughter, fewer sleepless nights, and a healthier, happier mindset. Remember, taking care of your mental health is no joke — but finding the humor in the journey can make it a whole lot easier.

Happy New Year, everyone! Let’s make it a good one.
